  1. How to build a jet engine?
    What is an easy way for a high school student to build a homemade jet engine. It doesn’t neccessarily have to use gas, but it could use something else.

    • There are kits available to build jet engines. Some of these kits can be quite expensive. You should be able to find them at your local hobby shop or look in some of the model aircraft magazines. You may be able to locate plans to build a ramjet engine on the Internet. Ramjets have no moving parts an may be simple enough to build in a high school shop class.

  2. Has anyone ever successfully built a MANNED experimental aircraft based on plans for large-scale RC models?
    Now… before all of the aviation and RC builders on here start lambasting me for what seems like a stupid question, please allow me to preface this with some context…

    I am an avid aviation enthusiast who has been interested in an experimental build or a kit plane for several years. I already have a very solid understanding of the physics involved and the inherent differences between manned aircraft and RC aircraft. I have a degree in mechanical engineering and I have studied fluid dynamics on scale models. Therefore I am not necessarily seeking an opinion on whether or not something like this CAN be done, as I am fairly certain that it can.

    What I have not been able to find, however, is any example of someone who has actually taken that step from RC model to experimental aircraft. There is quite a large community of RC enthusiasts that have pushed the limits of model aircraft closer and closer to their real-world counterparts (usually military aircraft). There is also a large community of home-built kit aircraft aviators who have flown just about every size and shape you can think of. And I would also assume that there are many members of both communities that crossover into the other.

    My question is, why hasn’t anyone, to my knowledge, taken the concept of RC aircraft (building air-worthy scale replicas of military aircraft) and applied it to home-built aircraft? Despite the differences in materials and payload, it is not unprecedented for propulsion systems designed for the RC market to be re-purposed for manned flight. RC jet engines have been successfully used on experimental aircraft in several capacities, and many of the larger-scale RC planes use the same mechanical components on their control surfaces.

    Despite all of the crossover in technology I still have never seen a home-built scale replica of an F-16, for example. I’ve never seen a scaled down experimental plane meant to replicate any of the popular fighter jets and iconic warplanes that you see in the RC world. The closest you might get would be the BD-10 jet which has the same look and profile as a fighter, but even that is virtually non-existent in the experimental aircraft community.

    Does anyone with experience in this field know why that is? I cant imagine it would be due to lack of interest in building one. Are there regulations that prohibit military-style aircraft features perhaps? Is there any reason why, with modern composites, a half-scale replica of an F-16 or an F-22 couldn’t be built aerodynamically stable for sub-sonic manned flight?

    Also, please don’t feel obligated to err on the side of caution when responding. I am not asking this to gather support for whether or not I should build one and try to fly it– rest assured I am not that foolish. I am simply asking whether something like this has been done or why no one seems to have gone there.

  3. How can i improve atv performance cheap? Can i do something to my exhaust pipe?
    I have a yamaha blaster with a big bore kit and k&n air filter, but everything else is stock and i dont want to spent alot of money.

    • The easiest and quickest means of improving engine output is by installing an aftermarket high-performance exhaust system. Dollar for dollar, a high-performance exhaust system can prove to be a great value when seeking more engine performance.

      Whenever an increase in engine output is achieved, there must be tuning changes made to compensate for the additional horsepower.
      The first area to be addressed here is the carburetion. More power always means more fuel — primarily from the main jet. Don’t be alarmed if the system you are installing calls for using the factory installed or stock jetting.

      Most manufacturers calibrate jetting on the “safe” side, so it is possible this may be a good, safe starting point. If your model has a computerized ignition system or fuel injection, it may require reprogramming. Whatever you have, make sure you get the correct model information and changes performed before blasting off or the quad could suffer engine damage before getting to your favorite trail.

      Whenever horsepower levels rise, so must your attention to jetting and fuel quality. Other changes can include gearing, clutching and ignition timing. Get into the mindset of constant heightened attention to the changing needs of a better performing exhaust system.

      When it comes to fuel, opt for premium without ethanol. Premium is not as volatile as regular and controls combustion chamber heat more effectively. Steering clear of alcohol in fuel assures more consistent jetting by reducing the chance of getting water into the fuel supply. Alcohol attracts and holds moisture, which can be troublesome for the engine

  4. Can anyone help me design a small one manned airplane like in the bond movie Octopussy?
    I have 2 small turbine jet engines that each produce 300lbs of thrust. I need ideas for the frame and the shell(how to get them). Also, i dont need it that much, but if any of u people have a design for the interior I welcome that too. If your design works out, I will put your name on it and put it on the internet.

    • The Bede 5, 7 and 10 were built and exist. I forget which was used in the movie. They use engines about ten times more powerful. The craft suffered from short range – maybe 500 miles. But that wasn’t a problem for a movie.

      You’ll need bigger wings than the Bede.

      If you can use someone else’s kit to build an existing design, you’re likely to get something in the air quicker. If you design your own from scratch, you’ll need wind tunnel testing, modeling, and so on. Which engineering degrees do you have already?

  5. What is the best standup jet ski for racing/tricks?
    I have been riding a one seater Yamaha Wave blaster for the last couple of summers and am looking to improve my tricks by getting a standup. Does anyone know the best one around, preferably an older model year that i can get on the cheap.

    • Start with a yamaha superjet, round nose, 701cc or 760cc. You will need foot grabs which can be bought as a kit and self installed. You will need hood grabs/re ducted hood to prevent water from coming in and killing the engine. Areas to improve the ski’s handling for freestyle: quick turn system, lightened flywheel, intake grate, ride plate, prop pitch(most freestyle riders do a 15-17 degree solas), milled head, ported engine, replace the reeds, switch to aluminum handle pole, bilge pump, scupper valves for water release, a new water box, manifold pipe, and if you want to go to back flips a trim system. That’s to start:) Your best bet is to look for a used freestyle boat built by someone that knows what they are doing and has competed as a freestyler. I have competed freestyle for over 16 years.
