  1. How does a mini jet engine work? How does it compare to a real jet engine?
Does a mini jet engine use the same type of engine as a real aircraft would? If not, is it even possible to buy a mini jet engine that acts the same as a real jet engine?

    • I’m assuming that you are referring to a turbine engine.

Yes there are miniature turbines that operate on the same principles as a full size turbine, compressing gas with impellers to create combustion, driving the motor.

There are also a few other types of engines that emulate the operation of a turbine.

The ducted fan motor uses a piston motor driven fan inside of a tube.

These types of engines are normally used for radio controlled models.

  2. How to build a jet engine?
What is an easy way for a high school student to build a homemade jet engine. It doesn’t neccessarily have to use gas, but it could use something else.

    • There are kits available to build jet engines. Some of these kits can be quite expensive. You should be able to find them at your local hobby shop or look in some of the model aircraft magazines. You may be able to locate plans to build a ramjet engine on the Internet. Ramjets have no moving parts an may be simple enough to build in a high school shop class.

    • They are “real” jets.
Due to scaling restrictions in a model jet engine compared to a full scale one, the compressor unit used is often rather larger than scale.
The operating principles are otherwise identical.

  4. Model Jet Engine Fuel?
I am planning on building a model jet engine. Would it be possible to create one that runs on propane, instead of have a fuel mixture injected into the engine? Have pure propane injected into the engine?

    Thanks.

What fuel do jet’s usually use for model planes? Jet A?

    • they use jet A or kerosene in the models…

      or

seems it has been done! jet a/diesel/kerosene are basically the same – jet a being cleaner, with more consistent octane.

Is the idea of propane to simplify the pressurization of the fuel?

Not to be negative…please do a personal inventory….
you have the skills to machine parts to those tolerences? and the equipment for milling parts? and a test room where it can be fired-up ?

I see they used an automotive turbocharger to simplify the project considerably…

  5. Model Jet Engine Turbines?
Where can I purchase pre-fab turbines for a model jet engine? If you know of an exact place, or have an idea, please answer. Your help is much appreciated.
